Nesting cameras

The insights over the past years showed us the problems our birds of prey are facing with raising their offspring. So this year we decided to hang 20 nesting cameras in sum to gain more information about the difficulties to take measures for protection.

In this gallery, we provide updates from our nest cameras to illustrate some of the hidden processes within our project area. Discover the private life of the red kite, buzzard and others!

Camera BS01

This nest on an oak has been a nesting site for red kites two years in a row allready. Last year their three eggs where eaten by a racoon. To save the offspring of predation by those non native predators we installed a cuff. After repairing the nest the breeding began on the 10th of April.

Camera BS03

In the nest on this beech red kites can be observed for two years now but they haven´t been breeding within. The waste on the nest is a clear indicator for red kite activity. This year the red kites can be seen frequently again but they probably won´t breed here.

Camera BS05

This nest is build on an oak which we also protect against predation with a cuff. Besides different singing birds and woodpeckers just buzzards could be observed here a few times yet.

Camera BS07

Also in this oak red kites where observed to breed, even if there is no waste seen within. Some visits were observed at the end of Febuary and beginning of March but it seems the redkite choosed a diffrent nesting site.

Camera BS09

This nest lays within a coppice forrest on a low height. At the beginning buzzards could be observed here but they changed their nesting site probably.

Camera BS11

In the nest on this beech also waste can be found which would indicate a usage through red kites. Even if now there could be just goshawk activitiy observed.

Camera BS13

This nest lays on an oak and is a nesting site for buzzards which diligently builded up the nest until April. This tree is protected by a cuff also because there is activity of racoons in direct proximity. On the 15th of April the first egg was layed and the breeding began.

Camera BS15

In a height of 30 m this nest also lays on a beech. This is a nesting site for Buzzards. Those are already busy with mending it. The breeding began on the 4th April.

Camera L002

This nest of black storks which is built on an over 150 year old beech should give us insights into the breeding of this shy storks. Since the beginning of March the first black stork can be seen there frequently. Its spending its nights there and mending the nest during the day with moss. Since the middle of March both storks could be observed but they left at the end of March. Maybe because the presence of a marten was threatening them. One stork is still visiting the nesting site frequently.

Camera L004

Last year we could observe a succsesful breeding of the red kites at this nesting site. Its also filled with waste. The first red kite showed up at Febuary 22nd this year. The first egg was layed on the 8th April since then the breeding procedure began.

Camera BS02

On this beech our red kites are also seen nesting for two years now. There could be no succesful breed observed during those years. In the first year the female adult was poisoned by diazinon and parathion. Last year their only nestling was killed by a native predator. Since the April 2nd the red kites are breeding and also a natural predator - the eagle owl could be seen during attacks in the night.

Camera BS04

In a height of minimum 30 m this nest lays on a beech too. Besides some jays, hawfinches, goshawks and buzzards could be observed yet.

Camera BS06

In the area around this oak red kites where seen repeatedly the last years. Since the end of Feburary the first breeding pair can be observed here. They already built up their nest massively. The first egg was layed on 31.03. since then the breeding procedure began and two more eggs were layed.

Camera BS08

Waste within the nest on this oak indicated a occupation through red kites. Since end of Febuary buzzards could be seen here and even a red kite was observed once.

Camera BS10

The massive nest in this beech could be used as breeding place for goshawks. Frequent activities could be observed in the beginning but this nesting site wasn´t choosen for the breeding.

Camera BS12

On this beech a nest is laying on a height of more than 30 m. In this nest goshawks have found a breeding place and can be observed on their breeding procedure since the 8th of April, since then four eggs where layed.

Camera BS14

With a broad entry path this nest lays on a beech near to the train tracks. At the beginning Buzzards be observed freqently but it seems like they won´t breed here. Also a red kite could be seen here for a short visit.

Camera L001

This nest also contains waste so signs are good for beeing a breeding site of the red kites on this beech. A breeding pair of red kites could be observed at the nesting site but the nest wasn´t choosen for breeding. Probably the presence of a marten which could be observed on the camera is a reason.

Camera L003

Even below this nest much waste can be found. Probably because of ravens are cleaning the nest. This nest is known as a breeding site for red kites for a while but wasn´t choosen this year.

Camera L005

The only birch within our nesting trees. An attentive look during a walk it might reveal this camera for some people. This nesting site is used and build up by Buzzards. The first egg was layed at March 26th and the breeding procedure began, since then two more eggs were layed. But caution, buzzards tend to be very territorial during their breed.
