Promotion of old-growth forest (C1)
Many animal and plant species depend on old forests that are rich in deadwood. This action aims at the long-term preservation of old-growth forest, the promotion of the habitat types 9110, 9180, 91E0* and the target species in the forest, the Black, Gray-headed and Middle-spotted woodpecker, as well as the Red Kite. In addition, together with Actions C2 and C3, a future gap in the age of species-rich oak stands and the above-mentioned habitat types should be avoided. The action also serves to promote beech forests, for which Germany has a global responsibility.
| Target area: | 50 ha |
|---|---|
| Measures: | Protection of old-growth forest, protection of nesting and cave trees, establishment of nest protection zones |
| Target species: | Black, Middle-spotted and Gray-headed Woodpeckers, Red Kite |
Progress of measures:
In 2022, approximately 2,782 habitat and cavity trees were recorded on about 585 hectares of forest area. This data serves as a basis for the targeted exclusion of old-growth structures from use and the establishment of nesting protection zones. During the "Nature Conservation in the Forest" workshop, the interested public was informed about the importance of habitat and cavity trees for biodiversity. Starting in 2023, contracts are currently being drawn up to secure particularly old forest sections.
