Promotion of deciduous forest (C2)

In order to prevent afforestation with non-native and non-native tree species and to initiate and promote forest conversion with native deciduous tree species, these are planted in Action C2 on former spruce tree plantations. In particular, the habitat types 9110, 9180, 91E0* are to be promoted, connected and expanded.

Target area: 50 ha
Measures: Initial planting of deciduous trees
Target species: Black, Middle-spotted and Grey-headed Woodpecker, Red Kite

Progress of measures:

In the first project year (2022), a prioritization map with areas for reforestation was created. The negotiation of which area should be reforested according to the measure objectives has not yet been fully completed. The first reforestation of 5 ha with alder (Alnus glutinosa) to promote alder-ash floodplain forests (habitat type 91E0*) in the Special Area for Conservation "Buchheller-Quellgebiet" has been conducted in March 2023.

Within the framework of a meeting of experts from North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse entitled "Reforestation and natural regeneration in times of climate change", the exchange across state borders was initiated.
